Russian Translation Course in London and on-line (Please forward to anyone who might be interested!)

University of London School of Advanced study is offering courses in translation. The Russian course is tutored by Robert Chandler, a renown translator of works by Vassily Grossman, Andrey Platonov, and Pushkin, among others. It a unique opportunity for anyone who considers translating Russian texts.

    TRANSATOR'S COURSES in LONDON and ON-LINE
    Use your language, Use your English

    This project offers training for native Anglophones who have an advanced knowledge of one or more other languages (research students and others) to develop their translation skills under the tutorship of practising professionals: seven translators and an editor. The courses take three forms:

    • A Taster Event (8-9 April 2011) at the IGRS, London: classes in French, German, Russian & Spanish - NB A few places still remaining.

    • Online training, freely available on the SAS VLE, moodle - these courses (Arabic, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish & Editing Skills) will be uploaded in spring 2011.

    • A Summer School (18-23 July 2011) at the IGRS, London: classes in Arabic, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish & Editing Skills.

Robert Chandler
Robert Chandler’s translations of Sappho and Guillaume  Apollinaire are published in the 
series ‘Everyman’s Poetry’, and his own poems have been published in a variety of journals 
including the TLS. His translations from Russian include Vasily Grossman’s novels Everything 
Flows and Life and Fate (recently the subject of an editorial in the Guardian), Leskov’s Lady 
Macbeth of Mtsensk  and Aleksander Pushkin’s  The Captain’s Daughter. His translation of 
Hamid Ismailov’s The Railway  won the AATSEEL (American Association of Teachers of 
Slavonic and East European Languages) translation prize for 2007 and received a special 
commendation from the judges of the 2007 Rossica Translation Prize.  Andrey Platonov’s 
Soul, of which Robert Chandler is a co-translator, won the AATSEEL prize in 2004, as well as 
being shortlisted for the 2005 Rossica Translation Prize and the Weidenfeld European 
Translation Prize.   Robert Chandler is the editor of  Russian Short Stories from Pushkin to 
Buida (Penguin Classics) and the author of Alexander Pushkin (in the Hesperus ‘Brief Lives’ 
series).   For the last six years he has worked part-time at Queen Mary, University of 
London, teaching classes in literature and in translation.  He is currently translating more 
works by Vasily Grossman and Andrey Platonov, to be published by NYRB Classics and 
Harvill Secker.
