 Invitation to a Wedding: The
conference

 In conjunction with the exhibition
Invitation to a Wedding: Ukrainian Wedding Textiles and
Traditions,  the Museum will host a day-long conference on Saturday,
October 22,  entitled "Invitation to a Wedding: Components of a
Traditional Ukrainian  Wedding ‒ Past and Present." The event,
organized by Lubow Wolynetz,  the curator of Invitation to a
Wedding and of the Museum's folk  art collection, will feature some
of North America's foremost Ukrainian  folk art educators and writers, as
well as a number of folk art  specialists, and will include lectures, film
clips, PowerPoint  presentations, and demo-workshops. Among the highlights
of the  conference will be Professor Natalie Kononenko's keynote address 
"Expressing Identity Through Ritual," Orysia Tracz's
presentation "Songs  Your Mother Should Never Have Taught You: Erotic
Symbolism in Ukrainian  Folk Songs," Alexi Currier's photographs of a
contemporary wedding in a  Ukrainian village, and Mary Kelly's lecture
"Goddesses ‒ Women ‒ Cloth:  The Worldwide Tradition of
Making and Using Ritual Textiles." 

    
        
             
 
        
    



 The conference will conclude with an evening
concert of Ukrainian  wedding songs and music performed by bandurist
Julian Kytasty and fellow  musicians and vocalists (for details, see
"More Wedding events" below). 

    
        
             
 
        
    



 The fee for the conference, which includes lunch, dinner, the concert, and a post-concert
reception, is $40 for adults, $35 for seniors, and $20 for
students; Museum members receive a 10% discount. 
 Seating is limited, so avoid disappointment
and register for the conference online

early to catch  this classic film, set in a Carpathian village, which sees
Ivanko fall  in love with Marichka – the daughter of his father's
killer.

Can't get enough of the wedding theme?
Then don't miss the  post-conference screening of this musical based on an
old Ukrainian folk  drama. Marusia's love is coveted by three potential
suitors: her  beloved Hryts, the sinister Khoma, and Potap. Wouldn't you
know, Khoma  plots to chase the other two suitors away in order to keep
Marusia for  himself. 
1938, 110 minutes, Ukrainian with English
subtitles 
 Admission to each film, including access to
the Museum's galleries, is $10. Purchase your tickets online

  CONCERT  
"After the Wedding: Ballads of Marital Mayhem" 
Saturday, October 22, 7:30 p.m. 
Bandura Downtown
(featuring Julian Kytasty) and the Center for  Traditional Music and Dance
join the Museum in presenting this  lighthearted look at love "after
the wedding." It's musical matrimonial  mayhem, so be sure to bring
your sense of humor! Tickets (available online 
or, space permitting, at the door) are $15; members and seniors $10; 
students $5. Admission is free for participants in the Invitation to a 
Wedding conference (see above).
