Yulia Skubytska (PhD Student, History, Penn) and Katherine Eady (PhD
Student, History, Berkeley) are looking for a third presenter for a panel
on center-periphery relations as they relate to the Soviet architectural
profession and architectural style. Our papers are on the 1920s and 1940s;
we are ideally looking for someone working on architecture in the 1930s. If

Panel description:
*The era of first-generation socialism was marked by the intense
transformation of urban environments in the USSR and later in the Eastern
Bloc. Each city had to be redefined in “socialist” terms, requiring the
appropriation of architectural styles approved by the Moscow leadership. In
this panel we will examine the process of centralization and unification of
architecture in the USSR and its socialist allies in the 1920s-1940s, with
an emphasis on center-periphery relations as they relate to the
architectural profession. We will investigate how architectural styles
disseminated from Moscow were interpreted and implemented by peripheral
architectural communities and what urban environments were forged as a
result.*
