CEELBAS Photography/Authenticity Workshop

Outline
This workshop will position Soviet and Central/East European
photography in the context of broader international debates relating
to the development of the photographic image as a witness to the
twentieth century. The improvement of print technology in the post-war
years positioned photography as a vital and accessible technology of
mass reproduction, yet it remained a marginalised field of artistic
culture. Photography functioned at an intersection of art and
authenticity, associated on the one hand with documentary realism,
naturalistic reportage and amateur practices, and on the other with
the experimental artistic traditions of early Soviet visual culture.

We invite proposals for contributions dealing with the following, or
related, themes:

 - How was the relationship between art and authenticity negotiated in
photographic representation?
 - What was the role of technology in the development of photographic culture?
 - What was the relationship between professional and amateur
practices of photography?
 - How were photographic images presented to the public in print publications?
 - What rules govern the use of Soviet photographic sources in
academic research and publication?
 - How can photographic sources be exhibited and disseminated? What is
the role of new digital technologies in this process?

This workshop will bring together scholars from a variety of
disciplinary backgrounds to address the role, status and aesthetics of
photography as a medium of artistic, documentary and amateur practice
in the Soviet Union and Central/Eastern Europe and beyond in the
second half of the twentieth century. It will provide a platform for
the discussion of theoretical and methodological approaches to
photography and will facilitate the sharing of examples of best
practice for the use of photographic sources in academic research and
dissemination.

vitae. Post-graduate students are encouraged to apply.
