Call for Papers: Byzantine Heritage of Rus'-Ukraine (10th -17th Centuries) Call for Papers: Byzantine heritage of Rus’-Ukraine (10th– 17th centuries) by Clare Griffin Dear colleagues, The Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Center for studies in Byzantine history and civilization (Centre d’histoire et civilisation de Byzance, UMR 8167 Orient et Méditerranée / Monde byzantin – Paris) and the periodical Scrinium. Revue de patrologie, d'hagiographie critique et d'histoire ecclésiastique (Saint Petersburg) are pleased to invite you to attend an international conference which will take place on June 19–20, 2014, in Kyiv, in the Institute of History of Ukraine. The conference theme is: Byzantine heritage of Rus’-Ukraine (10th– 17th centuries) The conference aims to allow discussions on a wide range of historical and cultural issues focused on the Medieval and Early Modern Period in territories now part of Ukraine. The participants and the organizers of the conference understand the “Byzantine heritage” in a broad sense, encompassing the various ways in which the Byzantine Empire impacted on the historical evolution of the nations and countries of Eastern Europe, which received from Constantinople Christianity, specific traits of their political institutions and a multifaceted cultural tradition, mirrored in their literature and art. The main topics of the conference are: – Historiography of Byzantium and of Ancient Rus’, transmission of texts, literary references. – Byzantine influence on political ideology and “state propaganda” in Ancient Rus’ and Ukraine. – Ecclesiastical history of the diocese of Kyiv: internal structure and jurisdiction, interconfessional relations and polemics. – Byzantine heritage and the evolution of arts: Ancient Rus’ architecture, Ancient Rus’ and Ukrainian icon and mural painting, applied arts. Working languages of the conference: Ukrainian, English, French, Russian. The time limit for each paper is 20 minutes.
