Hello, I am putting together a round table for the Philadelphia ASEEES meeting on different approaches to teaching the socialist/post-socialist city, art and architecture their morphology, physiology, and ideology. My own course, The Evolving City: Capitalist, Socialist, Modern has evolved since I first taught it in 2010 and now incorporates both the historic former Soviet socialist cities as well as socialist cities around the world (Cuba, Venezuela, China, Vietnam etc.) and the overlapping features of these lenses. I also cover artistic representations of cities. I would be interested in exploring the teaching of the visual and material culture of socialism and post-socialism from various points of view from stand-alone courses or as parts of survey courses. We can discuss approaches, texts, projects, visual material, etc. So many interesting books have become available on the subject…single city monographs for instance, that cross-city comparisons and contexts are now possible.
