Proposed Panel for ASEEES 2015

Dear All,
I am hoping that not all of you are committed to panels--as a member of the
board of ASEEES, I am required to submit a panel that addresses methodology
in the discipline. I am proposing here to set up a panel that addresses
questions of methodology by targeting more specifically the challenge we
and the subjects of our study face encountering, interpreting, or denying
the visual. The very concept of "Visual Culture" has been affirmed in the
discipline of art history by some (Whitney Davis) and rejected by others as
overly broad, leveling distinctive characteristics of various media. On the
other hand, it also has been argued that what is understood as visual, is
over-determined, shaped by canonical Anglo-American critical texts. The
goal of this panel is to group together diverse investigations into this
problem, whether focused on historical reception, phenomenological or
theoretical argumentation (by artists, or critics). I would welcome
interdisciplinary papers (bridging for example, the visual arts and film or
literature).
