Printmaking, and especially the technique of etching, was experiencing what
some scholars have called a ‘revival’ by the end of the nineteenth
century.  However, unlike most of Europe, where artists experimenting in
etching did so by asserting their independence from the academies and
salons, in Russia, the growing interest in the printmaking technique
occurred within academic walls. Dr. Mardilovich will explore the Russian
history of the medium by drawing on recently uncovered archival
information. Discussing works by Vasily Zhukovsky, Taras Shevchenko, and
Ivan Shishkin among others, she will also address the extent and
significance of foreign influences – from Rembrandt to contemporary
printmaking societies – on these Russian developments. In doing so, this
talk will examine what role etching played in the transformations of the
Russian art world more broadly.
