Join us at 2 p.m. for "The Art of Ukraine's Euromaidan: Changing the Environment of Protest," an illustrated lecture by Dr. Nazar Kozak, Senior Researcher in the Department of Art Historical Studies in the Ethnology Institute at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, who will be in NYC to speak at the 2015 College Art Association Conference. Euromaidan started on November 21, 2013 in the central square of Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, as a nonviolent resistance movement. In the course of ninety days it was gradually transformed into bloody unrest with over one hundred killed. Artists participated actively in these events as observers, as agitators and as environment builders. Dr. Kozak will discuss art projects created directly in the streets where protests took place. This art was not sanctioned by authorities, it was vulnerable to damage, and for the vast majority of its viewers it remained anonymous. Inspired by a variety of sources and realized in a number of representational media, these projects questioned the boundaries between art and religious cult objects, means of political propaganda and even weapons of riot. On the other hand, when brought inside barricades they lightened the doom in atmosphere of civil unrest with elaborated aesthetics engaging and inviting the protesters into the realm of remarkable art. Admission: $15, members & seniors $10; students $5. _____ Visitor information: http://www.ukrainianmuseum.org/visit.html "Like" us online! <https://www.facebook.com/UkrainianMuseum> <https://twitter.com/ukrmuseum> Hanya Krill [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> Programs and Marketing The Ukrainian Museum 222 East 6th Street New York, NY 10003 212-228-0110 212-228-1947 (fax) http://www.ukrainianmuseum.org _______________________________________________ Shera mailing list [email protected] http://lists.oakland.edu/mailman/listinfo/shera
