Dear Jane,

Thanks so much for assisting us with the search for an expert on mosques of
the Russian and the Caucasian regions for Rizzoli’s forthcoming book, *Mosques:
Magnificent Designs. *It will cover the principal mosques of the world
primarily from an architectural and ornament perspective, with a special
focus on interior design. This book has a publication date of *Fall 2017.*

This book will be oriented towards a general audience of educated readers
with an interest in Islamic art and architecture. We hope that the scholar
would contribute an essay of roughly between 2,000 to 3,000 words.

*Mosques: Magnificent Designs* will consider the most influential mosques
in five key regions of the world: the Middle East, Europe, North Africa,
Asia, and the U.S. (The Far East, the Pacific and the Southern Hemisphere
will form the subject of a subsequent volume). Beginning with the origins
of the mosque through its early development and maturation, and numerous
regional and national iterations, this volume will also explore
contemporary examples. It will be richly illustrated with photographs
and drawings
of major mosques showing exterior and interior views and furnishings, along
with related aspects such as gardens, mausoleums, and fountains. We have
included below the proposed chapter headings.

While there have been a number of important earlier works on mosques such
as Freshman and Hasan-Uddin Khan’s book,* The Mosque: History,
Architectural Development and Regional Diversity* (1994), we feel that
there a need for a clear, well illustrated volume that reignites people’s
interest in this important subject, along with impressive new mosque
designs that are not widely known.

We are heading this project on behalf of Leyla Uluhanli, a prominent
interior designer based in Moscow. She will be working closely with us to
in assembling a team of experts.

In addition, we are considering a short special edition of the book
exclusively on the mosques of Russia and the Caucasus for earlier
publication in *Fall of 2016. *This would consist of a slight expansion of
the essay prepared for *Mosques Magnificent Designs*. Therefore, this essay
would need to be written much sooner that the others. In fact we already
have most of the photography of the principal mosques available.

We are deeply grateful for any assistance you might provide in this area.

Cordially,

Jai & Sandy
