Call for Volunteers: SAH 2016 Pasadena/LA Conference
Volunteer sign-up is now open for SAH's 2016 Annual International
Conference. Every year, we have a number of dedicated and enthusiastic local
volunteers who assist us in welcoming the 500+ conference participants. We
have numerous opportunities for volunteering at the conference: assembling
registration materials, manning the registration desk, assisting with one of
42 paper sessions, tour check-in, mid-day roundtables and our Saturday
morning Los Angeles Seminar.

Vietnam & Cambodia Field Seminar
Vietnam and Cambodia, countries with dynamic economies and young
populations, possess a rich and wide-ranging architectural heritage. This
SAH Field Seminar (December 1-13, 2016) will explore the fascinating
architectural landscape of Vietnam, focusing in particular on the modern era
from the nineteenth century to today. In addition, participants will visit
the spectacular Angkor complex in Cambodia, capital of the Khmer empire from
the ninth to fifteenth century. Registration opens on Thursday, February 25,
at 3 pm CST.

Istanbul: Sultans' Mosques and Urban Expansion

In the first of two blogs that I plan to write about Istanbul, a main topic
will be Ottoman architecture in the city and current restoration projects.
In a city with currently about 15 million inhabitants, expanding highway and
public transportation systems, ongoing construction for a third bridge
across the Bosporus, and a new airport near the Black Sea, monument
preservation is a constant, pressing issue.

Call for Fellowships at The New York Botanical Garden
The Humanities Institute, a division within the LuEsther T. Mertz Library at
the New York Botanical Garden, is pleased to offer an Andrew W. Mellon
Fellowship for 2016 for current Ph.D. students or recent post-doctoral
researchers. Candidates are invited to submit an application for a project
that would expand the Garden’s role in humanities scholarship. Deadline
March 10.

SAH Chapter and Partner News
The Philadelphia Chapter announces our 2016 George B. Tatum Fellow, Erin
Putalik, PhD. candidate in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.
Putalik's dissertation considers architectural experimentation with “new”
construction materials in the US during the first half of the twentieth
century. It is her contention that as a wide range of newly developed
materials made their way into the construction market, experimental houses
provided an ideal platform through which to test and promote new uses for
new materials. 

The Historians of Islamic Art Association (HIAA) congratulates its new
executive board members: Marika Sardar (Treasurer), Nadia Kurd (Webmaster),
Alex Dika Seggerman (Social Media Manager), Jenny Norton-Wright (News
Editor), and Ünver Rüstem (Out-of-Country Representative). HIAA also
congratulates its recent grant recipients: Adeline Laclau and Emily Neumeier
were awarded Grabar Travel Grants, and Alex Dika Seggerman received a Grabar
Post-doctoral Fellowship to conduct research for her book, Reawakening
Modernism: Art in Egypt 1879-1967.
