SAH Awards Gala
Tickets for the 7th annual SAH Awards Gala go on sale September 7.  SAH will
honor the achievements of Richard H. Driehaus, Sarah Herda and Peter Landon,
FAIA. Co-chairing this year's gala are John M. Syvertsen, FAIA, American
Architectural Foundation; Cynthia Winter, AIA, Cynthia Winter Architects
LLC; and Nicholas Weingarten, FAIA. Proceeds benefit SAH's educational
mission and ongoing restoration of SAH's headquarters, the Landmark
Charnley-Persky House. If you are unable to attend, please consider

SAH Receives Graham Foundation Grant for Glasgow Seminar           
The Society of Architectural Historians has been awarded a 2016
organizational grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the
Fine Arts to help support the SAH Glasgow Seminar, “Making and Re-Making
Glasgow: Heritage and Sustainability.” The seminar is part of the public
programming of the SAH 2017 Annual International Conference in Glasgow,
Scotland.

Scotch Whisky Tasting
Enjoy an afternoon of fine Scotch whisky tasting on September 24 at the
Franklin Room in Chicago, presented by the University of St. Andrews in
partnership with SAH. Proceeds from the event will benefit the University of
St. Andrews' 600th Anniversary Campaign and the Society of Architectural
Historians' 70th Annual International Conference to be held in Glasgow,
Scotland, in June 2017.

SAH Study Day: Louis Kahn in San Diego and La Jolla
Save the date for the SAH Study Day "Louis Kahn in San Diego and La Jolla"
on November 4, 2016. William Whitaker, curator and collections manager of
the Architectural Archives of the University of Pennsylvania School of
Design, and Jochen Eisenbrand, chief curator of the Vitra Design Museum,
will lead a special preview tour of their exhibition Louis Kahn. The Power
of Architecture at the San Diego Museum of Art, the first retrospective of
Louis Kahn’s work in two decades.

Highlights from SAHARA: Houses of Worship
Religious buildings constitute one of the richest collections in SAHARA.
>From iconic structures like Angkor Wat and Saint Paul’s Cathedral to rural
churches and ruinous temple sites, houses of worship showcase the breadth of
interest of SAHARA contributors as well as their geographic reach. This set
of highlights includes an extraordinary 16th-century church in Guatemala as
well as a mosque in the shadow of the Acropolis.

Museums In and Out of Doors: Curating Art, History, and Nature on the Island

As I approach my sixth week of travels, I am enjoying a very welcome feeling
of familiarity with Reykjavík and its environs. I have a favorite coffee
shop, a preferred place to watch the late night sunsets that never
disappoint, and the capital city’s parks are now animated with locals and
visitors due to the recent ‘heat wave’.

75th Anniversary of JSAH
The Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians celebrates its 75th
anniversary this year. Widely recognized as a leading English-language
journal on the history of the built environment, JSAH offers scholarly
articles on topics from all periods of history and all parts of the world,
reviews of recent books, exhibitions, films, and other media, and a variety
of editorials and opinion pieces in each issue. Congratulations to all who
have had articles, reviews, and other pieces published in JSAH over the past
75 years.

National Humanities Center Fellowships 2017-2018
The National Humanities Center will offer up to 40 residential fellowships
for advanced study in the humanities for the period September 2017 through
May 2018. The deadline to apply is October 18, 2016.

ACLS Buddhist Studies Program
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), in cooperation with the
Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, offers an integrated set of fellowship
and grant competitions that will expand the understanding and interpretation
of Buddhist thought in scholarship and society, strengthen international
networks of Buddhist studies, and increase the visibility of innovative
currents in those studies. The Foundation offers five competitions to

“Iconoclasm and Vandalism” at the Getty Center
The Getty Research Institute is accepting applications for its Scholars
Program for 2017-2018 with the theme "Iconoclasm and Vandalism." Applicants
are encouraged to adopt a broad approach to the theme by addressing topics
such as religious and political iconoclasm, protection of cultural heritage,
use of spolia, damnatio memoriae, street art, graffiti, performance art, or
activism. For detailed instructions, eligibility requirements, and

SAH Signs Letter Concerning Threats to Academic Freedom in Turkey
SAH is among the scholarly organizations that have signed a letter called
"Threats to Academic Freedom and Higher Education in Turkey" issued by the
Middle East Studies Association on July 21, 2016.


SAH Chapter and Partner News

The Society of Historians of East European, Eurasian, and Russian Art and
Architecture SHERA announced the receipt of a tax-exempt donation in support
of conference travel for a graduate student. The grant is given in honor of
the Russian art historian Maya V. Semina, the author of Filipp Maliavin
(BooksMArt Press, 2014). Award procedures will be elaborated at the SHERA
Membership Meeting during 2016 ASEEES Annual Convention.

 

The Saarinen (Michigan) Chapter was proud to have founding member Tom
Trombley presented a 2015-2016 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Michigan
Historic Preservation Network (MHPN) for “35 Years of Dedication to
Discovering and Sharing the History of Saginaw.” At the MHPN’s 36th annual
statewide conference just held in Detroit, founding chapter member Janet
Kreger was chosen to present “A Battle of Designs: Albert Kahn and the
design of his 1924 Literary Building at the University of Michigan.”

Select SAH Opportunities
SAH Membership Grants for Emerging Professionals: These awards provide
one-year SAH memberships to emerging scholars to bridge the gap between the
Society's subsidized student memberships and full-cost memberships. Deadline
September 12.
H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship: $50,000 fellowship that allows a
recent graduate or emerging scholar to study by travel for one year.
Deadline October 3.
HABS-SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship: Permits a graduate student in
architectural history or a related field to work on a 12-week HABS history
project during the summer of 2017. Deadline December 31.
