Well, of course I never said it should be the only criterion. The facts
are, however, that most original scores were often miserable pastiches of
stale concert warhorses and stock hoary cues that did little service to the
films and, more often than not were not used after the first run.

My principle point was that silent films present a rare opportunity for
alternative interpretations. And that "authenticity" is far less important
with regard to the audio than it is for the picture.
