When I was looking for an undergrad program, I had something similar in mind. I'm not entirely sure that I'd insist on a program without production again, but was very happy with the University of Toronto's cinema studies program. And it's cheap.

Steve Fore's post raises a question that i think worth some careful consideration from the list . . .   it came in response to a purely practical query which i sent out on behalf of parents who really want their son to be an academic/intellectual and not a creative or artistic type; since i don't know the son i can't say why they asked for this, but they did -- and i take that there are personal issues involved but the larger issue raised by steve is MUCH more interesting and provocative . . . it seems to me that a case can be made - and for many years was conventionally made - that there in fact  is "an inherent tension between theory and practice" - that [to put it crudely] one is a matter of philosophy, the other a matter of craft . . . but rather than make the case myself, even if only for the sake of argument, i wonder if other h-filmers want to share some thoughts as a way of opening up a conversation about this
