From: Lindsey Danis <[email protected]> Dear Colleagues, Have you ever had the experience of sharing your research with an archive or library in order to improve their finding aids? Have you ever given a librarian or archivist input to correct/add to their catalog? Have you participated in tagging or crowdsourcing projects for libraries, archives or museums? The WGBH Media Library & Archives <http://openvault.wgbh.org/> wants to hear from you! We are investigating the scholar and researcher users experience when contributing your data and insights to catalogs and finding aids. Whether you've participated online or locally, at a library or archive you've visited, we want to hear your story. What motivated you to participate? How did the experience make you feel? If you haven't participated, why not? We are publishing our catalog and would like our users to help us improve it in the most user-friendly way possible. Our catalog includes a rich array of resources in history, political science, sociology, general education, information technology, health sciences, women’s studies, and the arts. Mellon Foundation Principal Investigators: Karen Cariani, Director, WGBH Media Library & Archives [email protected] Peter Pinch, Director of Technology, WGBH Interactive [email protected] Abstract: Through the WGBH Digital Library Phase Three Participatory Cataloging project, WGBH Media Library and Archives proposes to publish online its archival catalog in order to test its value in attracting researchers to the collection, and to pilot a low-cost framework for building a vetted resource suitable for research use through the metadata contributions of our scholar users. In addition, we propose to work with the digital humanities and emerging digital publishing communities to ensure that streaming archival media is supportable and available for these advancing fields. -Lindsey Danis Mellon Intern WGBH
