Apart from Bordwell's "Film Art" I would recommend this one, which is very good for practitioners who want to learn the theory:

Basics Film-Making 04: The Language of Film (Robert Edgar-Hunt, John Marland) 

If your syllabus is more targeted towards film studies students, try this one:
Film Theory: An Introduction Through the Senses by Thomas Elsaesser and Malte Hagener
