It sounds similar to a Play of the Week episode that aired in 1961 where
crew members are orbiting the earth and while in space a nuclear war occurs
on earth making it uninhabitable.  It was called The Night of the Auk but I
have no idea how to get a copy.  IMDB does mention it.
