John Wayne

Good People:

I've got a summer course on "The Wayne Westerns" on the horizon.  I'm
finding that students don't "know" Wayne well, if at all, any more, and I'd
like to frame the course with reference to Wayne's iconic role in the
culture as symbolic American hero, model of American masculinity,
representative of a certain political stance, and so forth -- and to see
how the Westerns helped create that role.  I see such promising book titles
as Emanuel Levy's John Wayne: Prophet of the American Way of Life, Roberts
and Olson's John Wayne: American, and Garry Wills's John Wayne's America:
The Politics of Celebrity. Would there be other books and especially
articles suitable for an undergraduate course that list members who've
worked with Wayne might recommend?
