If I had to pick only 6 of Hawk's films to show they would be, in the following order of importance:

The Big Sleep
Bringing up Baby
His Girl Friday
Red River
Only Angels Have Wings
Ball of Fire

I think that list showcases some of his best films, as well as his range as a filmmaker and together demonstrate many of his hallmarks as an auteur. (They are also all entertaining and I have found my students like most of them.)

Three Hawks books that I found interesting are: Howard Hawks Storyteller by Gerald Mast, Howard Hawks American Artist edited by Jim Hillier & Peter Wollen and Howard Hawks A Jungian Study by Clark Branson.

One of my favorite film books is Gerald Mast's Howard Hawks,
Storyteller. It's unfortunately out of print, but if you could get hold
of it, I'd recommend it.
