Dear list members,

I would like to draw your attention to a documentary that I completed
in 2011 as part of my master course in media arts and design at the
Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany. The film with the title
"dazwischen" (52 min) is showing 4 video portraits of young Berlin
Muslims who share their memories and experiences on how they struggle
between faith and identity, culture and religion, love and hate. As a
secular Muslim, an Alevi woman, a handicapped and a gay Muslim, and as
an ethnic German convert, they represent minorities in a minority, as
Muslims, Germans and Berliners.

The portraits are built around five inquiries, as to (1) who they are,
(2) where they come from, (3) what is their relationship with faith,
(4) how they relate to the city of Berlin, and (5) where and how do
they find their inner peace. The visuals are walking us through their
neighbourhoods and life situation. Thus, considering the mediatic
format and the informational value, the film can also bee seen as
visual anthropology. Aesthetically the film proposes a poetic
interpretation of the life situation of the protagonists, seeing their
in-between situation not (only) as problematic and conflictual, but
also as a value in itself, as a source of strength.

A trailer of the documentary, along with a flyer and stills from the
movie, can be found at http://kultmediaberlin.wordpress.com/
documentary/.
There is also a blog devoted to the documentary at http://dazwischen-derfilm.blogspot.de/
.
The film is not on the release circuit yet. Screening licenses for
institutions can be arranged through KULT media BERLIN, a project of
alternative cultural media, for which I can be reached at [email protected]
.

The film has been made by me, Subir Che Selia. I originally come from
Malaysia and have been living in Berlin since 2007. Trying to
understand cultural and religious issues of migrants in Germany and
other countries, is one of my topics, with others rooted in
experimental film-making and photography on social issues, but also
personal life situations. I am currently preparing for a an artistic
PhD project.

Apologies for cross-posting.

Best wishes,
Subir Che Selia
