Children's film query

From: Kenneth Nolley <[email protected]> I have just received this query from a former student who has spent much of her life working as a children's librarian. I will use her words (slightly edited for brevity) to ask the question. In addition to the Newbery and Caldecott awards, the children's librarians' division of the American Library Association gives the Carnegie Medal to the most distinguished contribution to children's film that is not shown in commercial theaters. There are lots of small producers who create films for home and library use and the award was intended to encourage these small productions. Librarians who are good at talking about theme and character development through word choice, are not (I would argue) as experienced talking about character development through lighting, music, and camera angle choices. We would like to have a recommended reading list for folks when they are appointed to this committee. The books and articles could focus on adult or children's film as long as they encouraged critical, informed viewing. If anyone in your extensive resource pool has ideas for us, I would much appreciate them.
