Thanks a lot to everybody who has so far contributed to this rich thread!

What I'm also interested is in finding instances of early and classical
film theoretical or critical writing which celebrate cinema's power to
enhance or enlarge reality, and on making the invisible visible. Balazs
would be a starting point … and Bazin, of course … but there are others,
too, of course.
