temporal cross-cutting [a trivial pursuit?]

my wife, who watches much more TV than i do, pointed out that many of her
favored shows favor sequences which cross cut between two related events
that take place at different times . . .  most recent example: SCANDAL cuts
between the president killing a supreme court justice in her hospital bed
and his eulogizing  her at he funeral   . . . my wife was sure that this
must be something borrowed from films, and asked about examples

i immediately came up with one:  in roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW the love making
of christie and sutherland is intercut with their getting dressed afterward
 . . . but that's the only example that came to mind . . . no doubt there
are others - and i would find it interesting to trace this back and see
when directors first discovered that it's possible to cut between different
times as well as between different places  . . .   suggestions??
