From: Frank Conlon <[email protected]> Contemporary Trends in Indian Cinema, Studies in South Asian Film and Media In this issue of the peer-reviewed journal Studies in South Asian Film and Media we solicit essays that reflect on contemporary trends in Indian cinemas, including: Hatke Cinema, a new genre of small-budget cinema that, using mostly unknown actors, foregrounding realism over melodrama, is structured around social issues The tremendous growth in regional cinemas and their audiences Representations of new themes and experiments in film form in Hindi as well as other language cinemas. New business practices, such as financing by banks and exhibitions venues, including multiplexes and film festivals Experiments in engaging the cinematic with contemporary arts practices The striking ways in which contemporary cinema is engaging with the city and urban subjectivities The fascination with and representation of masculinity, sexuality and crime The politics of nation and state In particular, we are interested in essays that contextualize these contemporary trends in the history of Indian cinema.
