Panel CFP: Case Studies of Online Film/TV Distribution Platforms

The digital age has profoundly changed the economic and cultural logics of
how film and TV are distributed and consumed. Distributing content online
affords new economic opportunities and challenges for the industry, and
opens up new ways of interacting around and engaging with media for
consumers. This proposed panel will pursue a nuanced examination of how
film and television circulate online by exploring specific case studies of
online streaming video platforms. Sites like Netflix, Hulu, Mubi,
IndieFlix, Youku, Crackle, Fandor, and SnagFilms are established players in
the streaming video industry, as new platforms, such as Warner Archive
Instant and RedBox Instant, continue to enter the digital market. These
companies respond to the opportunities and challenges of online
distribution by relying on a variety of acquisition strategies,
subscription models, and techniques to help users find content. Meanwhile,
they facilitate certain forms of user engagement with and around their
content, and even construct online cultures of cinephilia and fandom.

This panel welcomes case studies that focus on industry strategies or user
practices, with preference given to proposals that put these two things in
conversation.

Possible paper topics may include, but are not limited to:

-Subscription/advertising models

-Content libraries and acquisition strategies

-Industry Competition and Partnerships

-Techniques for curating content or recommending content to users

-Website interface architecture and design

-Niche/Specialized platforms

-Online cinephilia or fandom

-Supplementary features included on websites

-Analysis of user practices/participation
