Fwd: CFP Publishing Opportunity Race and the Vampire Narrative

Dear Colleagues,

Just a final reminder that the deadline for the following publishing
opportunity is this Friday August 9.

Race in the Vampire Narrative, under contract with Sense Publishers as part
of their Race & Ethnicity Series, seeks classroom ready original essays
from scholars with PhDs, which explicitly connect the vampire narrative to
studies in race and ethnicity.  The two core areas of exploration are the
use of vampires as metaphors for race/ethnic construction and/or
marginalization; and the place (or lack of it) of non-white vampires in
popular culture.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:
*       Vampires as racial minority/marginalized group (i.e. True Blood)
*       Vampires as metaphor for racial/sexual/class fears (i.e. Dracula,
Carmilla, Blade, Vampire Diaries)
*       Origin tales of non-western vampires (especially comparative papers)
*       African American/Asian/Latino fans and fan culture
*       Vampires as metaphor for the ways marginalized groups are
absorbed/commodified
*       The presentation of non-white vampires in popular culture (both as
protagonists or minor characters)
*       The erasure of non-white vampires in popular culture.
*       The vampire as metaphor for hybridity (Meyer's Twilight Series,
Butler's Fledgling)
*       The monster as sympathetic minority (I.e. vampires vs.
Werewolves/zombies etc.)

We particularly welcome proposals for original works that explore
non-traditional fictions such as works from African American authors, the
Asian vampire narrative, and the image of the black/Latino vampire in
American film and television.

Please submit proposals (350-500 words) by Friday August 9th 2013, along
with a brief biography (150-200 words), to [email protected]. If your
abstract is selected for inclusion in the volume, first drafts (5,000 to
7,000 words) will be due Friday January 31st 2014 with the final edits due
by Friday June 27th 2014.
