Fwd: Cultural history of dance on film

Thanks for everyone who offered their ideas on this topic. To the
Moderator's response I would like to add, that there is even greater
scholarly neglect of dance in films in general. It would be very
interesting to read what kind of connotations different kinds of dances
have had in films made at different times, what kind of narrative and
thematic implications they have had, and how all this has reflected and
influenced notions about dance in general. The responses to my query
suggest that a lot of interesting work has been done on tango in all these
respects, but apparently very little else.
