Tribute: Jim Welsh

Some list members will know and remember Jim Welsh, one of the founding editors of Literature/Film Quarterly, and a friend to many people in the community of film people in many places.  Jim had a special ability to connect people to each other, and I suspect that I am not alone in the H-Film community in mourning his passing. Dear All,
I’m sorry to write to you with in the context Jim Welsh’s death. I just heard this morning, and I wanted to contact you all without delay. I hear that he passed away yesterday afternoon, at home with his family. He was surrounded by the books and other things he loved. He will be terribly missed by the campus community of Salisbury University, not least for his having taught at SU for over thirty years.
As some of you already know, I have ensured that a new archive collection for the Literature Film Association will be established at our library in his name.  There are already plans afoot for a memorial on our campus, and I will email you as soon as I have details so that you can consider coming. Dave and I also plan to create an issue of Literature/Film Quarterly dedicated to him. At this point, we would love to receive any tributes to Jim and the professional life he led. As co-founder of the journal, he left a lasting legacy, and this is how Dave and I came to know him. That said, we did not know him nearly so well as many of you, and I hope that those of you who are inclined to write a piece for us will not hesitate. We want to be sure that we give him a full and representative tribute in print. To that end, we’ll publish as many tributes as we can, and we’re asking that they be comparatively brief (perhaps between 500 and 1000 words apiece). Please also feel free to pass on this message to anyone else who might want to send us something.
On a personal note, it is unthinkable to me that Jim is gone. I had come to think of him as the Sir John Falstaff of Salisbury—he deserved more chimes at midnight.
