CfP: Best practices in research valorization and industry cooperation for
Film and Media Studies
Increasingly, over the past two decades, applications for research grants
have come to feature a paragraph on =91societal relevance=92. Or, as the la=
test
buzzword has it, research valorization. Fundamental research or the
accumulation of knowledge for its own sake no longer convince
policy-makers. What can your research do for society? What big problems
does it help solving? These questions are often hard to answer for scholars
in the Humanities. Some of us lament the changing tide, but other may
welcome it. A few may embrace valorization, but many others struggle to
work around these new requirements.
Some seek the answer in cooperation with cultural institutions. Others work
together with artists, or with commercial partners in the creative
industry. But this raises new questions : Where lie the priorities of the
research? Who is in charge? What different agendas and objectives come in
play?
I would like to organize a panel or workshop during the 2014 NECS
conference in Milan (19-21 June 2014) to discuss and reflect upon research
valorization in film and media studies. I am specifically interested in
contributions that:
- Share success stories!
- Or bad experiences=85
- Reflect critically on the implications of the increased importance of
research valorization for our disciplines.
- Or offer advice for writing grant applications.
But subjects are of course not limited to this short list. I am looking
forward to any suggestions or propositions you=92d like to make. Please sen=

the conference organization asks for abstracts of max 150 words and 3-5 key
bibliographical references.
