Subject: Call for Papers, WOCMES : representations of =93the people in revo=
lt=94 in intellectual production

Call for Papers
World Congress of Middle East Studies (WOCMES), Ankara
http://www.wocmes2014.org/
18 to 22 August 2014.

Panel: =93Al-Sha=91ab yath=FBru=94: representations of =93the people in rev=
olt=94 in intellectual production

Chair : Layla Dakhli (researcher at CNRS - IREMAM)
Organizers: Melanie HENRY (PhD candidate AMU / IREMAM - CEDEJ) and Marianna=
 GHIGLIA (PhD candidate AMU / IREMAM - CEDEJ)

This panel intends to investigate a few representations of =93the people in=
 revolt=94 that were produced by different categories of Egyptian / Arab in=
tellectuals in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The term =93intell=
ectual=94 is used here in a broad sociological sense, thus including cultur=
al creators and mediators in general.

Collective actions in periods of insurrection are the object of various syn=
chronic and diachronic cultural and intellectual productions (text, image, =
music, etc..). As we consider the way historians, journalists, writers and =
artists (musicians, filmmakers, etc.) represent =93the people in revolt=94,=
 we question the modes of enunciation to understand how they contribute to =
the recognition and definition of insurgents. It is a matter of situating t=
he intellectual production of representations of =93the people in revolt=94=
 within the battle for legitimacy through specific fields and its socio-his=
torical consequences. In other words, which part do intellectuals play in d=
efining the reality of the category =93people=94? How do they contribute, r=
etrospectively, to shape and distort the agents=92 knowledge and awareness =
of reality? And moreover, do intellectuals include themselves in the catego=
ry =93people=94? Which social groups do they identify with?

This panel will provide an opportunity to deepen our knowledge and understa=
nding of intellectuals and their social role in authoritarian contexts, to =
discuss and reflect together on the concept of =93symbolic power=94, on the=
 relationship between knowledge and power and the issues arising as a resul=
t of it, on the relations between =93the people=94 and the =93intellectual =
elite(s)=94, as well as the ones between intellectuals and political power =
and more generally the =93political power =96 insurgents =96 intellectuals=
=94 configuration.
