Film and the Other Arts, 1895-1955
- an interdisciplinary symposium -
Friday-Saturday 4-5 April 2014
Grove Auditorium, Magdalen College, University of Oxford

The aesthetic connections drawn between film and the literary, visual and
performing arts were familiar themes of the discourses of early cinema. In
this symposium, researchers from a broad range of disciplines in the
humanities will consider the overt representation of the arts on film
throughout the first sixty years of the medium. In what ways did fictional
and documentary approaches to filming 'the other arts' dovetail with, and
diverge from, aesthetic and critical debates about intermediality? How did
the transition from silent to sound film in the late 1920s shape the ways
in which music and the performing arts were represented on the screen?
Across a number of genres, media, and national cinema traditions, we will
address how theory and practice informed one another as film technology,
and the film industry, took shape.

This invited symposium will feature two keynote addresses:

Professor David Trotter (Cambridge, English) - 'Hollywood's Toilettes de
Venus'
Professor Peter Franklin (Oxford, Music) - 'The Threatening Audience: From
Distant Sound to A Night at the Opera'
Papers will consider such topics as: facial expression and the theatrical
tradition; implied sound in Weimar and Soviet film; dance and copyright;
the framing of fine art; intertitles, women's magazines, street singers,
composer biopics and domestic architecture. In addition, there will be a
special screening on the Friday evening presented by Jane Pritchard,
Curator of Dance at the V&A. The full programme will be announced closer to
the date of the symposium.

Hours:
Friday 4 April - 1:30-6:00pm, plus evening screening 8:45-10:00pm
Saturday 5 April - 9:00am-6:30pm

Registration: Advance registration for attendees is required. Registration
fees are payable by cheque by 31 March: the fees (=A335 full or =A325 stude=
nt)
