[SwF] Atif Jal .. Bachpan ki pictures

Pakistani pop music is going at great guns these days. In fact the potential of the Pakistani pop artists was quite visible since the days of the evergreen Nazia and Zohaib but within the last few years the pop music industry seems to be revamped. The sprouting up of various music channels seems to have given the budding musicians a solid platform through which they have presented their flair of music to the rest of the world in a best possible manner.

Junoon, Strings, Fuzon, Adnan Sami and several other names like this are not only quite popular in Pakistan but their music has also crossed the boundaries and is making the Indians drool over the ‘original’ pop music. Indian Pop is mostly remix based and that’s why the pure rock music of Pakistan is a breath of fresh air for them. They have welcomed the Pakistani artists with open arms and

most of the musicians here are desperately looking for some opportunity to compose the tunes for Indian films or releasing their albums through Indian labels such as HMV, Saregama etc.

While surfing through the seemingly countless number of channels on the cable I stopped at an Indian music channel and was very pleased to see that they were featuring the video of the hit and rocking Pakistani single, Aadat by Atif. This song is literally creating waves on the Indian charts these days and is ample proof of the singer’s virtuoso.

Banking heavily on the success of Aadat, Atif went on to take out a complete album “Jal Pari” which is the hottest and the latest compilation to hit the music stores. But does Atif’s debut album live up to the expectations generated by “Aadat”? Well yes to some extent Atif does churn out numbers that are somewhat similar to Aadat in terms of
quality but the main hiccup in the album is that it tends to get monotonous due to some tunes that are little hackneyed.

The piece de resistance on this compilation is undoubtedly “Ab tou Aadat See Ho Gai Hai”, which has skyrocketed this new ‘kid’ on the block to fame. The best part of this number is the guitar, which hypnotizes the whole rhythm of the song. It only takes one or two listening to get addicted to this song and humming its tune frequently. This infectious single is included in the album in three versions and each one provides ample proof of the singer’s singing genius. He lends his vocals in this song with utmost perfection as a result of which his voice gels extremely well with the mood of this song. All in all one of the best pop
numbers to come out this year.

More lyrical maturity is seen in the rest of the numbers of this album.
Ehsaas is one such track. The puzzling lyrics are although quite abstract but they catch your attention instantly “Main Ik fard hou ya ik Ehsaas houn…main ikk jism houn ya rooh ki pyaas houn…k sach ki talaash hay duur aakaash hai manzil paas nahee kiya tou meray paas hai…”. Coupled with the fresh background score the number is very listener friendly. Same zest and flamboyance can be seen in “Zindagi”. The rendition in this track is even slicker and it continues the rhythm created by the opener “Aadat”. “Yaqeen” is a meloncholic track with right amount of emotions.

The title track “Jal Pari” is although a little different from the usual kind of tracks but is not as good as one expected. The idea of making a song on Jal Pari is a new one and Atif has surely defied the

norms in this number. But it could have only appealed if the musical elements of this song would have struck an emotional cord. That is not to say that it is a below average number but it just doesn’t click at the point where it should have.

On the whole the album is a treat for the pure rock lovers but it doesn’t have the mass appeal. It caters to a certain class of customers and that’s it. Atif has a long way to go and one expects much better work from him in future however his debut album is not completely a futile effort rather it is his first step to stardom.
