Pakistani universities to
be linked through optic fibre network

KARACHI: Pakistan will
become the first country to link all its universities through a
fibre-optic system within the next two months, while four
educational TV channels would be launched under the Virtual University
project; two of these by the end of next
month.

Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rehman, Minister-in-charge of
Science & Technology and Chairman, Higher Education
Commission (HEC) was speaking as the chief guest on the occasion
of the sixth convocation of the Institute of Business Management
(IBM) held at its Korangi Creek Campus on Thursday.

He said that 60 Pakistani universities in the
private and public sectors would be linked together within the
next two months, besides 1,160 research journals that would be
made available online, under the plan of building a virtual
library in the country, to which researchers, faculty members
and students would have free access.

Pakistan has already launched its space
satellite for carrying out these schemes in the arenas of higher
education and Science and Technology on priority basis, he
added.

He said that under a separate programme for
luring Pakistani professionals from abroad to teach in the
country’s varsities, so far 115 applications had been received,
while the scheme provided the hiring of 300 such professionals
on an annual basis.

He mentioned that some European countries like
Austria and Finland with a total populations of not more than a
city of Pakistan had developed their GDP many times better than
our country through the advent of scientific education, he
added.

In his welcome speech, President, IBM Shahjehan
S Karim said that there were over 2,000 students enrolled at the
institute, besides 50 full-time faculty members and over 100
adjunct and associated faculty.

As many as 215 degrees of business
administration and computer science were awarded on the
occasion, which was attended by members of IBM Board of
Governors and dignitaries from various walks of life.

Some 102 degrees of BBA (Honours) were awarded
to passing out graduates of three batches whereas, 21 students
of two batches were awarded the degrees of Bachelors of Computer
Science (BCS) of 2003.

About 24 graduates were awarded the degrees of
MBA, 23 were conferred on the degrees of MBA (Executive)
whereas, 47 graduates were given the degrees of MBA, who had
earlier passed BBA (Hons) from the same institution.

Isma Zaighum, MBA (Regular), Sakina Ghulam
Asghar, BBA (Hons), and Khurram Ahmed Suhrwardy and Bushra
Fasih, MBA (HRM) were awarded gold medals for achieving highest
Accumulative Grade Point Average (AGPA). Dr Atta-ur-Rehman
awarded the gold medals, which were sponsored by various
philanthropic and corporate bodies.
