Monticello Theatre Association will hold open auditions for the Southern comedy "The Hallelujah Girls" at 2 p.m. on April 7 and 7 p.m. on April 9. Auditions will be at the Phoenix Theatre, 1406 N. Market Street, Monticello.

Director Jaclyn Loewenstein seeks six women and two men who can play ages 45-65. Auditions will consist of readings from the script. Character descriptions and audition monologues can be found at: www.monticellotheatre.org.

Performances will take place June 1, 7 and 8 at 7:30pm and June 2 at 2 p.m.

"The Hallelujah Girls" is written by the popular trio of comedy writers: Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten (of TV's "The Golden Girls"). The action takes place in Spa-Dee-Dah!, an abandoned church-turned-day-spa in Eden Falls, Georgia, where Sugar Lee and her feisty friends congregate. After the loss of a dear friend, the women realize time is precious, and if they're going to to make the most of their lives, now is the time. The comic tension mounts when Sugar Lee's charming ex-fiancée unexpectedly arrives at the spa, and her longtime nemesis vows to take over the church building and destroy Spa-Dee-Dah!

The Monticello Theatre Association (MTA) was formed in 1975 and thrived in its Camp Creek Playhouse venue from 1989 until 1999, when a fire destroyed the theater. In 2010, MTA purchased and renovated its current home, the Phoenix Theatre. "The Hallelujah Girls" marks the company's fourth production at the Phoenix and its first with professional director, Jaclyn Loewenstein.
