Position Description

Position: Technical Design Assistant (Events Technical Director)

Salary: Commensurate with training and experience
Ten-Month (July 16-May 16) academic professional appointment.  Full range employee benefits. Start date: September 9, 2013 (negotiable)

Department: The Krannert Center Events Department supports logistic and production needs for all performances and events affiliated with Krannert Center including academic,rental and professional presented events.  
 
Duties: The Events Technical Director works collaboratively with events and production personnel to support the productions of the Krannert Center and the academic departments affiliated with it, manage logistics, and supervise stage crews. The Events Technical Director may teach or provide real-world training opportunities for students seeking careers in the performing arts.
 
Major duties and responsibilities include planning and safely and efficiently executing the stage technical elements of presented touring events, School of Music concerts and recitals and facility rental events. This involves supervision, scheduling and coordination of student and extra help stagehand labor, discussion and negotiation with artists and clients regarding their needs, maintaining inventory of in-house supplies, maintenance of in-house equipment to proper safety standards, arrangements for necessary rental equipment, setup, strike and storage of equipment, and related
responsibilities.   
 
In addition, this position makes decisions authorizing equipment use and special requests through consultation with the Assistant Director for Events and manages equipment inventory, while making decisions on how to safely execute production needs while maintaining budget efficiency. 
 
In consultation with the Assistant Director for Events, the Events Technical Director manages the student and extra help stagehand workforce, including initiating hiring of new employees, scheduling, supervision and any initiating of disciplinary or termination action.  This position may have direct discussions with local I.A.T.S.E. stagehand union representatives regarding staffing issues.   
 
The Events Technical Director may teach up to one course per year in an area of specialization related to stagecraft and technical theatre and may be asked to supervise
students on independent studies or internships as time permits.  This position provides support to academic productions through the School of Music as needed and provides supervision and on-the-job training opportunities to Department of Theatre students working on touring shows.

Bachelor's degree required. Expertise in stagecraft, rigging, theatrical safety practices and related technologies required. Experience with computer drafting software (preferably VectorWorks), audio, lighting and video technology and significant experience with theatrical touring logistics and transportation are highly preferable. ETCP (Entertainment Technician Certification) in Theatrical Rigging is preferable.
