SMALL MOUTH SOUNDS by Bess Wohl

Performances Nov. 2-18 (every night except Mon. & Tues.)
Six runaways from city life embark on a silent retreat deep in the woods wi=
th a renowned guru. As they begin to confront what ails them -- from heartb=
reak to illness to overactive libidos -- their vows of silence bump up agai=
nst their need to connect (and the ever-present threat of bears).
SEEKING 7 ACTORS (3F, 3M, 1 either). All roles are available; ages listed a=
re somewhat flexible:
ALICIA: Female. Any ethnicity. Around 30, from Southern California. She is =
the kind of person who manages to make a lot of noise even when she=92s =93=
in silence.=94 She recently went through a very bad breakup and is looking =
for something-- or somebody--to make her feel okay again. Cries easily.
JOAN: Female. Any ethnicity. Late 40=92s. A therapist and sex educator. War=
m, open and compassionate, she is also incredibly, mind-bendingly angry und=
erneath.
JUDY: Female. Any ethnicity. 50-ish, Joan=92s partner. Works as a top edito=
r at an =93O magazine=94-like publication. She=92s the kind of person who o=
nly needs four hours of sleep per night=97she=92s direct, competent and cap=
able. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and, as the doctor sai=
d, she =93will not have a good outcome.=94
JAN (prounounced "Yahn"): Male. 50-ish, from a small town in Finland. He do=
es not speak much English. He is sweet, with a wide-eyed, continually curio=
us air about him, like a sprite or a woodland creature. He is a pastor at a=
small, Lutheran church back in Finland. He came to spirituality after a gr=
eat loss to try and find answers and peace.
NED: Male. A 39-year-old Jewish guy from Great Neck who works for a non-pro=
fit called Earthwatch and has had a severe run of bad luck worse than the w=
orst country western song. Anxious, insecure, and angry.
RODNEY: Male. Any ethnicity. Mid-30s, physically fit, gorgeous, comfortable=
with his body. Grew up in the Pacific Northwest, teaches yoga in New York =
and the Hamptons. Though he is married, his extensive man jewelry does not =
include a wedding ring.
TEACHER: M or F. A disembodied, androgynous voice with a strange, slightly =
accented way of talking (a bit Tibetan, perhaps). The androgynous tone migh=
t be the result of some kind of sickness, or might be just the way the teac=
her sounds. There is a humor and dryness to this voice that comes from a se=
nse of age and a life lived. It has a sense of authority. TEACHER is never =
seen, only heard (but the role will be performed live at each performance).=
Should sound middle-aged (40s-60s).
AUDITIONS will be held in small groups (in order of arrival) and will consi=
st of:
1) Very short scenes from the script (though the silent retreat doesn't all=
ow for much dialogue, all the characters DO speak at some point)
2) Silent scenes from the script
3) Monologues for The Teacher, Ned & Joan

First rehearsal: Monday, Sept. 25.
9/25-10/21: Flexible rehearsal schedule, based on cast availability (approx=
. 2-3x per week in SW or downtown Champaign).
Move into Station: Sat. Oct. 21 at 9pm.
Rehearsals at Station: 10/23-27 evenings
Tech: Sat. 10/28 daytime
Dress rehearsals: 10/30-11/1
Please be prepared to list conflicts on audition form.
