We've all seen the horrific images of the aftermath of Indian Ocean
earthquake and resulting tsunamis, and as relief efforts continue,
the toll in human life will only grow. We are already being warned
to prepare ourselves that for as many victims of the tidal waves
there will be, there may well be many more who die in the days and
weeks ahead from resulting disease and starvation. Many of the
countries struck by this disaster are ill-equipped to handle the
immediate magnitude of the human suffering, and have made an
international appeal for help.

Many governments have responded by pledging financial aid and
manpower…but such assistance comes slowly. Thankfully, the
International Red Cross and Red Crescent societies have already
sprung into action, rushing personnel and supplies to many stricken
areas. But already, the effort is straining the ICRC's resources,
and with all of their other global responsibilities, the Red Cross
has put out an urgent call for donations.

Watching this terrible disaster unfold, it's natural to feel a sense
of helplessness, and to ask what we ourselves could possibly do to
help those in need. Well, we can do something very important…we can
help the people who are helping those in need.

If you go to the American Red Cross's webpage at
http://www.redcross.org, you will find a banner link at the top of
the page that will let you make a direct online donation to the
tsunami response fund. You may also make a donation via the
International Red Cross site at http://www.icrc.org.

As this past weekend's disaster makes plain, no matter how advanced
civilization might become, we could all be prey to nature's most
ancient disasters. But technology does now give us the means by
which we may help those in need of our help.

Please be generous. Thank you.
