Re: And a dark Valentines Day to you all...

I think that most females do not like David Lynch's movies, but most would 
like Twin Peaks, because when it comes down to it, TP is a "primetime drama" 
i.e. soap opera (a really strange and intelligent soap opera, granted).  I, for 
the most part fit into that category.  

I first saw Twin Peaks during the summer of 1993.  I was on break from my 
first year of college and staying at my parents new home, where I knew nobody my 
age.  I babysat for a family that had the entire series on tape, so I borrowed 
it and my sister and I watched about 4 or 5 episodes a day. I was immediately 
drawn to the eccentric characters (soap operas are all about their 
characters) and the intruiging plotlines.  I loved and still love trying to wrap my 
brain around the story to try to figure out what exactly is going on.  I have 
since shown the series to many female roommates and friends, and they have all 
enjoyed it, if not quite as much as me.

TWIN PEAKS was my first exposure to David Lynch, and considering he did not 
write or direct the entire series, it never got too dark for my liking.  Its 
quirkiness balanced off with its darkness perfectly, in my opinion.  When I 
first saw FWWM I hated it.  (After repeated viewings with my husband, I have come 
to love the movie both on a mental level, as it poses many new theories, and 
on an emotional level, as I am quite moved by the sadness it evokes.)  I loved 
THE ELEPHANT MAN, but as far as BLUE VELVET and WILD AT HEART go, they are not 
for me.  With BLUE VELVET I at least can appreciate the masterful directing, 
but the story makes me sick.  As far as WILD AT HEART goes, I find that movie 
disgusting with no worthy attributes.

I have not seen THE STRAIGHT STORY, but think I would probably love the 
beautiful simplicity of it, and for the exact opposite reason I think I would hate 
LOST HIGHWAY.  I did see MULLHOLLAND DRIVE, and I absolutely love it.  Again, 
this is probably because it started out as a series pilot, setting up 
characters that sucked me in.  This movie, like TP is one that I have many theories 
on. 

In short, I think I am intelligent enough to appreciate David Lynch as a 
director, but not all of his work is for me.
