Congratulations. Clearly, your mind is abuzz. If you remember back
to the conversation Cooper and Hawk had about the Black Lodge, Hawk
said a "shadow self" existed there. Assuming those legends are
correct, the only people in the lodge at the end were Cooper, Annie
and Windom. Everyone else was the shadow self, or doppleganger.
That would explain why Laura didn't remember meeting Cooper before,
because it was her shadow self. I think it was Cooper's shadow self
that escaped.
As far as the symbolism, I think it depands. Some of it may have
meaning. Some of it is purely for effect. The meaning behind the
coffee lies in the fact Cooper loves coffee.
