Because the people keeping it up (for now, for all I know it'll be down 
forever the next time I try to connect...) seem to be effectively 
impossible to contact to get the modification/addition to happen?

Tho as I said, Lars posted some replies here last month.  I'm not sure 
whether that means he's involved again longer term or not, or otherwise 
where it might be going, as with anything gmane these days, not a lot of 
information to go on, but I wasn't the only one to be happy to have him 
back.

There's a few regulars here, but I must say it feels a bit like the user 
list for my news client (pan) that was effectively without a maintainer 
for awhile (I'm not a dev so couldn't do much about the lack of 
maintainer, but have been a user and list regular there for over a 
decade).  That list went thru some dark days and it felt for awhile like 
I was about the only one keeping the lights on, but it recovered, with 
some very active development for awhile tho it has calmed down now, and 
pan is better now than it ever was.

As I said there's a few more regulars here still than on the pan list 
back during its dark period, but similarly no one active that can 
actually do anything with it.  But hopefully the same thing happens to 
gmane, and after this dark period, it comes back better and stronger than 
ever! =:^)
