While this doesn't work for gmane for obvious reasons, back when I was a 
frequent normal newsgroup poster, I wanted to encourage people to 
followup to the group, not to my email address, but to make it available 
if needed, as well as prevent incoming spam.  So I munged my (dedicated 
news) email address, set a filter on incoming mail that required a 
specific keyword (NEWS) at the end of the subject line, and put a line in 
my sig saying reply to group please, but to look at my X-Munging headers 
for instructions if a personal reply was necessary.

It worked pretty well.  The keyword filter on that email address killed 
the spam, and only people motivated and technical enough to read and 
follow the custom headers got thru to me via email.  In fact one use was 
a guy from another state that was in town, so we setup a lunch 
appointment.  Now /that/ is an appropriate use of personal email, as 
opposed to newsgroup replies.  =:^)

I suppose I could still do the keyword thing, tho I'd have to use a valid 
email address for gmane, so I couldn't rely on the no such TLD bounces 
enforcing things as I did with the munged address.

X-faces are interesting, too, but I'd guess you don't consider them 
arbitrary headers that no one reads, since you use one yourself. =:^)
