I had two use cases for the web interface:

a) Googling brought me there, either directly, or I found a
   link to another archive and then looked if that thread
   was also available on Gmane (because Gmane's UI was "bet-
   ter" IMHO).

b) Whenever I wanted to reference a mailing list post/thread
   in documentation, another mailing list, etc., I used the
   value of the "Archived-At" header.  While technically
   "nntp:" URLs (or even better "news:" URLs) are superior,
   "http:" URLs are far more widely supported and do not
   trigger endless questions on how to access a document.

Having said that: 99.9 % of my Gmane use is via nntp, and
I'm eternally grateful to those who keep that service up and
running :-).
