While technically "nntp:" URLs (or even better "news:" URLs) are superior, "http:" URLs are far more widely supported and do not trigger endless questions on how to access a document. Having said that: 99.9 % of my Gmane use is via nntp, and I'm eternally grateful to those who keep that service up and running :-).
