Unfortunately, opportunistically secured NNTP is not supported by clients as widely as NTTPS is. Namely, presumably the most popular free user-agents — Mozilla’s ones: Thunderbird and Seamonkey do not [0], and judging by the level of interest to this issue, they never will.
