Sure, but in the case of aforementioned examples, there is no need to _argue_. Thunderbird developers are able to completely ignore the request, that is to continue doing what they have been doing quite well for more than ten years. And Pan does not support STARTTLS for SMTP, as it does not support SMTP or any other protocol other than NNTP at all.
