I programmed in Perl for a living up until a couple of years ago... and we switched to Python :-) > But seriously, do you think there is really something to that? The latest email on the beginners mailing list was in November last year, that's not that long ago. Hopefully the next one reaches Gmane. But yes, my younger colleagues all cringe when Perl is mentioned. Then they remember that some of us used to program in Perl, and then they try to divert attention from the cringing. I actually liked that we were using kind of a "niche" language¹, because it meant that everybody (ok, most) actively _chose_ the language they were programming in. Like, they actually had a fucking preference, not just using whatever they were told to. These days everything is Python (or Javascript), and that's because that's a) what is taught and b) what is hip. For the last decade or so I've been trying to teach myself Haskell by writing things I want² - progress is slow and I don't see any companies around here looking for Haskell-competencies. But I digress. Best regards, Adam ¹ To be fair, Perl wasn't that niche in bioinformatics, but it is becoming more and more so. ² First thing that was actually doing something is the web-part of Feedbase (https://feedbase.org/), currently I'm starting to use an nntp-based "blogging engine" (Lantern: https://koldfront.dk/git/lantern/about/) on https://koldfront.dk/ -- "Hur långt man än har kommit Adam Sjøgren Är det alltid längre kvar" [email protected]
