I kept a list to remind myself of the conventions, something like:

  .devel
  .user
  .cvs .scm
  .bugs
  .general
  .announce

Oh my, that .cvs looks positively ancient now.

I also kept these reminders:

  "non-public" means only subscribers can post
  "unidirectional" Mail-to-news, but not news-to-mail at all
  "read-only" (announce, scm groups etc.)
  default bi-directional

  "dead" - trying to post returns an error (for when the list is gone)

  All the [email protected] lists needs
    crosspost=no

Maybe the new reactive WUI could suggest something reasonable?

Hm. But how.

How about popping up the most popular parts in each position, and, eh,
maybe filtering on input of chars, like sort of an auto-complete thing
from existing groupnames?

Not sure whether that would be useful or not.
