Address munging

Dear Gmane masters, as far as I understand, the gateway that had allowed sending mail to munged addresses <[email protected]> have been no longer usable quite for a while, and so are the groups affected. These include some pretty old and pretty alive mailing lists, which have paradoxically been hanging in a state that is worse than being completely absent from Gmane. I am not going to ask (yet) whether I can offer any help in fixing this, because, I believe, there is a better question in the first place: is there any reason, why this (mis)feature still exist at all? I am not sure, if it possible for accumulated messages to be trivially reverted to their pristine state, but at least for newly incoming mail address munging could be disabled, could not it?
