C++11 support?

Hi,

I would love to see us using C++11. it is available for a while on gcc
and clang. I know a recent version of MSVC has it too, but then we have
had a Windows build in so long that I don't think it is relevant anymore.

This would only happen in trunk, and this does require much changes but
would allow many things to be better like removing some of the boost
dependencies.
