question on plain ASCII text documents under Windows Xp

I installed abiword 2.8.6 as a potential replacement for Microsoft Word and WordPad both of which are able to handle plain ASCII text files with ‘ and “ in them but when I pick up the same document in abiword the ‘ and “ seem to be some kind of formatting control 

Also I don’t seem to be able to save a document I create in abiword as a plain ASCII text file, I chose save-as and select Text (.txt, .text) but the file is “scrambled” and has strange characters in it.

This is a sample of some data saved

This is a test of characters ‘ “ . , ;

It should be

This is a test of characters “ ‘ . , ; 

What am I doing wrong?
