Adjust the size of abiword by dragging it edge until it fills the
screen. After you close abiword, the next time you open it it will be
same size as the time time you used it. (Which fills the full screen).

Click on the "T" toolbar icon the far side the format icon. Choose the
color you want from set provided or choose cutom color. All text you
enter or select will be the color you choose.
